Image Optimization

While it mostly depends on the software available to you, there are several methods to optimize images for the web. The industry standard for optimizing images is to open the photo in Adobe Photoshop and select File > Export > Save for Web. From here, you can define dimensions and the quality of the image.

Finally, save the image. You now have a web-optimized image!

  • Quality: this number influences how compressed the image is, the greater the number the larger the file size and vice versa. 60 is a reasonable number that won’t affect the image quality much.
  • Image Size: this number affects the dimensions of the image. Normally, viewing the images in a web format you wouldn’t need an image larger than about 1000px wide with the exception of full size banner images which can vary in scale.

What if I don’t have Photoshop?

If you don’t have Adobe Photoshop available, there are free alternatives, however here is one we’ve used in the past when it wasn’t available

PhotoPea.com* – Similar to Photoshop in its interface, this is the closest web-friendly version of photoshop available. The instructions for this are similar with the exception that File > Export As then your image type saves the image.

TinyPNG.com* – An intuitive drag and drop interface that allows you to optimize/compress images. Unfortunately this platform doesn’t allow for resizing the dimensions of your image.

ImageCompressor.com* – A simple interface that allows you to control the quality of the image sizes. Unfortunately this platform doesn’t allow for resizing the dimensions of your image.

A workaround (in Windows 10) is to open the image as a preview and open the menu on the right hand side with 3 vertical dots, select the “resize” option to scale the dimensions. This will affect the dimensions of the image but not compress the image to make it ready for the web.
