GC Crowns its 2024 Fantasy Football Champion
January 9, 2025 | By Megan Habel

On any given day, a common lunchtime discussion topic arises:
“Did you see how Brian Thomas Jr., Malik Nabers, Bucky Irving, and Brock Bowers dominated this season as rookies? They’re definitely top picks for next year.”
“Can we talk about Ja’marr Chase? The guy’s a machine!”
“I can’t believe I wasted my fifth pick on Breece Hall this year.”
Being at GoldenComm for almost three years, I’ve come to recognize this topic of discussion: Football season is in full swing and, with it, Fantasy Football.
Every year, we hold a Fantasy Football competition between willing participants in the Newport office. It’s a great way to get to know fellow coworkers, add a bit of friendly rivalry, and add some excitement to the workweek. The prize? Bragging rights.
This year, we had 10 competitors. Crowded around the lunch table, we kicked off the all-important draft. Strategies varied, including one coworker who picked up four different quarterbacks. Week by week, we battled it out and an unsuspecting leader rose the ranks. Brian Daley ended the regular season in first place with an impressive 10-4 lead. Right behind in second place was me and my aptly-named team, “Megan’s Men”.
However, standings are erased and the competition starts fresh once playoffs start. Unfortunately, this is no underdog story of how I, a decidedly non-football fan (until Taylor Swift started dating Travis Kelce), rose the ranks and became champion. With a few unlucky games, Brian and I slipped from the lead with CJ Bautista and Brock Ricci battling it out for the win. In the end, with over a 50-point lead, Brock came out on top.
Maybe I’ll have better luck next year. Until then, I guess I’ll focus on my day job: online marketing.
